Legend holds Pazzino dei Pazzi carried three flints from Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre to Florence after the First Crusade. The stones, kept at the Church of Santi Apostoli, still kindle the holy fire on Holy Saturday. By the late 15th century the ritual had grown into the cart-and-fireworks spectacle seen today.
